About Islam in South East AsiaSingapore sits at the heart of the great Islamic crescent that runs from India down through Myanmar and southern Thailand into Malaysia and Indonesia, and back up to Brunei and the southern Philippines. Overall, Asia is home to 65% of the world's Muslims and Indonesia is the single most populous Muslim country, with around 200 million faithful. The great majority of South East Asian Muslims are Sunni and follow the Shafi'i school of fiqh. Islam first reached South East Asia with traders from the Middle East and India in the 7th century CE, shortly after the lifetime of the Prophet (pbuh). By the 13th century CE, extended trade connections and the work of Sufi missionaries led to the formation of Islamic sultanates in Malaysia and Indonesia. It is noteworthy that Islam was not imposed by conquest but freely adopted, firstly by the royal and aristocratic classes, then filtering down to the general population. The most important early Muslim power was the Sultanate of Aceh in Sumatra which controlled much of the area between South East Asia and India. Aceh, of course, was the epicenter of the 2004 tsunami that caused such terrible destruction. Visitors to Aceh and other Muslim provinces that were affected noted with amazement that while most buildings had been washed away, mosques and Muslim cemeteries still stood untouched. Allah is truly great! In recent decades, South East Asia has seen an Islamic resurgence, with Dakwah movements spreading across the region with the aim of instilling a strong Islamic identity among the ummah. Muslim women in South East Asia have traditionally been free to engage in business and public life. This remains true today, with Indonesia becoming one of four Muslim countries to elect a female President (Megawati Sukarnoputri). Besides running their own businesses, South East Asian Muslim women serve as judges and are well represented in government, university faculties and the professions. In a region with significant minorities of ethnic Chinese and Indians, Islam is growing in strength and the future for the Muslimah is bright indeed.
